High Performance Survivable Communications in Distributed IoT Deployments Use Case

The High Performance Survivable Communications in Distributed IoT Deployments Use Case is based on the implementation of the 6inACTION PPDR technology (www.6inaction.net) that will be made available to the ARCADIA project by UL. 6inACTION is an advanced system designed to provide public safety agencies with a survivable, scalable and robust communications and professional IoT-supported intervention management services during day-to-day operation and disaster relief missions. It comprises of 6onCORE, a compact mobile IPv6-powered communications node, designed to equip first responders with survivable communications during disaster relief missions. Deployed on site, it provides transparent backhaul connectivity via any available professional, commercial or ad-hoc network by means of powerful IPv6 technology and smart tunneling. Also deployed on site is 6onFIRE, a mobile IoT gateway with 6onCORE features and a selection of COTS sensors. It supports IoT-based situation surveillance and intervention management available in 6onDASHBOARD, which is a professional intervention management software designed for command and strategic levels as well as for cross-agency and international public safety operations. Furthermore, UL will make available their experimental and production environment with virtualized and cloud-based server infrastructure, and connectivity via broadband commercial and GEANT networks while the scenario is also going to be replicated and tested in a smart city in Italy.

6inAction presents different requirements for providing services upon the existing architecture based on the application scenario. High-performance communications in day-to-day operations and survivable communications in extreme conditions have to be supported since the provided application is executed in a distributed system with distributed service intelligence. On-site intervention monitoring has to be supported as well as a series of mobility and location tracking characteristics. The innovation that will be added in 6inAction based on the implementation within ARCADIA regards the use of the project’s technologies (especially the use of Smart Controller implementation in companion with OpenFlow technologies) for virtual channel establishment allowing for transparent communication via one or several available networks represented as a single virtual channel. Context-driven routing with dynamic QoS support and dynamic cross-network admission control and service pre-emption will be supported, while based on the provided implementation, very high availability with near-real-time reroute capabilities allowing for (almost) instant fall-back scenarios in case of extreme conditions causing failure of individual networks information driven servicing will be supported. Finally, information-driven user, service and network prioritization will be provided based on network and service contexts.
